After long anticipation, it is finally the day of your big move. You’ve probably been planning this for weeks, if not months. With everything ready to go and your movers at the doorstep, it’s time to get started. But wait, are you ready for today? Do you have a plan for your move? Have you thought about what you will do after? To help ensure your move goes smoothly, there are a whole host of things to consider. To help with this process, we’ve put together a simple guide on some important steps to remember during the day of your big move:

#1. Wake up with plenty of time.

Regardless of what time you are actually beginning to move, you’ll want to be up and ready with plenty of time to spare. We find that there is almost always some kind of last minute packing to do such as collecting your food from the fridge, or finally putting away your essential hygiene items. You’ll want to be ready for the day early in case this, or any other step along the way takes longer than expected. It is always good to do some last minute organizing so that your movers can more easily load up your belongings.

#2. Do a final sweep.

At this point you are probably already packed, but you can never be too sure. Give your house a once over and look for any unpacked and forgotten items. You certainly don’t want to leave anything important behind. Don’t forget to check the storage areas like your garage, shed, attic or basement. You never know what you may be forgetting until you look.

#3. Guide your movers.

If you are hiring a moving service, it is always good to give them a run-through of your packing strategy. This is a good way to let them know which boxes should be backed first, which should go in last, and which may be more fragile than others. Another tip for this is label your boxes using a system of your own or one the movers use to ensure this happens easily. Organization is key when packing, moving and unpacking your belongings.

#4. Stick around as the movers pack up your things. This is easy and again, it helps you ensure things are being packed appropriately. While it may take a little extra time, it can provide you with the confidence that you know your belongings are safe and secure. A little extra effort if often worth the additional peace of mind.

#5. The final-final sweep.

Now that your home is literally empty, give it yet another look through. Make sure everything is packed and you’re not leaving anything behind. You can never be too safe.

#6. Get your new place ready.

It is important to have a plan for unloading your things at your new home. If possible, we would recommend visiting your new home beforehand to create your plan of attack. You will want to decide where to put specific items like furniture, appliances and large boxes ahead of time. This will speed up the process, help you unpack appropriately and increase efficiency for your movers. It is also ideal to have a plan for where certain boxes will go for the time being. Keep your more immediate needs in an area with easy access and leave the less important items for later unpacking. Making sure you know what to do during this first stage in your new home will help you easily set up your new location.

#7. Guide the movers.

Just like when you were packing up, being in the home and guiding the movers through the unpacking process ensures things are being done appropriately. This will provide them with a good idea of what you want while simultaneously giving you the peace of mind you want. Taking an active part in the moving and unpacking stage will also save you a lot of hard work later on. Unpacking in a strategic manner can help you manage your space, time and work.

#8. Unpack the essentials.

Now that you are finally in your new home, you will want to unpack the immediate essential items that you will need over the next day. It is often a good idea to pack these in a separate or specifically labelled boxes so they are all together. At this stage, give yourself a break and take some time to simply unwind and relax for at least a little while, you’ve earned it. The next few days are going to entail a lot of work and rest is actually going to be important and necessary to stay energized and level headed.

#9. Set everything up.

This is the point where you will unpack all of your things and start setting everything up. Depending on your schedule and lifestyle, you may need to do this in a rush and if you are lucky you can take your sweet time. Regardless, this step is a lot of work, but the feeling when it is finished will be all worth it!

#10. Finally relax!

Doing a big move is one of the most exhausting experiences out there. Once you are finally done, you will probably be experiencing a feeling of both exhaustion and pure relief. Relax, unwind and enjoy your new home. This is probably your first chance of soon to be many more to do this.
